NURSE RALLY: Members of the labor union New York State Nurses Association held a picket outside of Mount Sinai’s New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in Lower Manhattan yesterday to call for a contract that not only includes safe staffing and higher pay – but also a commitment from management to keep the hospital open. Mount Sinai has long attempted to merge the facility with its Beth Israel Medical Center in the Lower East Side, but after the health system announced the closure of Beth Israel the outcome of the desired merger is in limbo. The uncertain future of New York Eye and Ear Infirmary has led to staffing challenges as nurses leave and management does not hire replacements, the union said. NYSNA members are pushing for a new contract to improve staffing and pay after their existing agreement expired over a month ago.

GENDER AFFIRMING CARE: New York City Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan in East Harlem performed its 200th gender-affirming surgery, the hospital announced Tuesday. Clinicians performed masculinizing top surgery on 29-year-old Euro Spiritty from Bedford-Stuyvesant, who is nonbinary and uses the pronouns they/them and he/him. Roughly 80% of the gender-affirming surgeries performed at Metropolitan are masculinizing top surgeries, the hospital said.

HOSPITAL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Northwell Health announced a “best practices” agreement with Attorney General Letitia James on Tuesday, outlining its policies to provide low-cost or free care to patients. The agreement, which applies to all of Northwell’s 21 hospitals, expands the health system’s financial aid policy to New Yorkers who make up to five times the federal poverty limit, equating to $156,000 for a family of four. The agreement expands Northwell’s financial assistance policy beyond what’s required of hospitals in state law, the attorney general’s office said.
