A fire caused serious damage to a Zion residence early Saturday, but the residents were able to escape the house, Zion firefighters said.
One occupant was treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation, authorities said.
The fire was reported at around 12:08 a.m. Saturday at a house in the 3200 block of Gabriel Avenue, the Zion Fire & Rescue Department said. Heavy smoke and fire were coming from the garage and front of the house when firefighters arrived, and Zion firefighters activated an alarm for mutual aid.
Firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading to adjoining houses, though two adjacent homes sustained some damage to windows and siding from the heat.
All occupants escaped without serious injury, authorities said. A firefighter was evaluated at a hospital for a minor arm injury, the department said.
The fire apparently started in the garage and spread to the main part of the house. Damage was estimated at $200,000. About a dozen departments from the region responded to assist Zion firefighters.
