Selena Gomez almost looked right past the man who now feeds her steak in bed, and what a tragedy that would’ve been. In a wide-ranging Time profile published on Wednesday, the beauty guru and Taco Bell loyalist explained that while she and boyfriend Benny Blanco are very much in love, she almost passed him over for one of his friends. Not only that, but the 31-year-old mentioned she had an entire life mapped out for herself BB (Before Benny) and was ready to proceed with or without a partner.
“I was alone for five years, and I got really used to it. A lot of people are afraid of being alone and I probably tortured myself in my head for like two years being alone, and then I kind of accepted it,” Gomez said. “Then I came up with my plan, which was I was going to adopt at 35 if I had not met anyone.”
Then came Benny: TikTok chef, producer, and all-around average guy. The actress explained that she’d initially seen Blanco as a friend and had gone so far as to ask him to set her up with anyone he deemed worthy. But, according to Gomez, the night he introduced her to a friend at a birthday party was also the night she realized she might be living a real-life friends-to-lovers fantasy. “It just happens when you least expect it,” she added.
Though Gomez doesn’t rely on Blanco as her “only source of happiness” — a surprisingly healthy outlook on a modern relationship — she doubled down on wanting to keep the cookbook author around as long as possible. While I’m spiritually against Blanco and much of what he represents (excessive mentions of “getting laid” and such), I’d be remiss not to give credit where credit is due. The man rented out an entire theater so she could watch her favorite movie, Almost Famous, on Valentine’s Day. He even removed the theater seating in favor of a couch, ensuring she would be extra comfy. Is this man winning us over? How did we get here?
