NY-area hospital executive pay reaches new heights — again

Pay for the city’s highest-ranking hospital officials, which ballooned during the pandemic, continues to climb as Covid-19 recedes in the rear-view mirror, according to an exclusive data analysis from Crain’s.

Average compensation among executives was $5.7 million for 2022, the most recent year for which data is available. The figure represents an 18% jump from 2021’s average. Total compensation across the 35 individuals on the list was just shy of $200 million.

The annual list of highest-paid hospital executives and doctors uses data from financial filings to calculate total compensation packages. The figures include an employee’s base, bonus, incentive pay and other reportable compensation from their primary hospital as well as any related organizations.

NYU Langone dominated the list of highest-paid hospital executives, with 12 of the slots. RWJBarnabas had the second-highest number of executives on the list with six.

Robert Grossman, NYU Langone’s chief executive, held the top spot. He brought home $14,473,316 in 2022. More than $10 million of the compensation was from bonuses. Last year, the slot went to Barry Ostrowsky, former president and CEO of RWJBarnabas, who earned more than $16 million in 2021. Ostrowsky, who retired at the end of 2022, was eighth on this year’s list, with a total compensation package of $7.2 million.

Philip Ozuah, the president and chief executive of Montefiore Medical Center had the second-highest compensation package on this year’s list, at $9.86 million.

The city’s top-paid doctors’ compensation amounts to less than half of the executives’. Average compensation across the top 35 doctors is $3.2 million, a 6% increase from last year, and the total compensation across the list is about $112 million.

Joseph Levine, chief of electrophysiology at St. Francis Hospital, was the highest-paid doctor in the metro area for the second year in a row. His total compensation was about $6.7 million, consistent with last year’s pay package.

Northwell Health had the most doctors, 13, on the top-paid list, between five at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, four at Lenox Hill and four at North Shore University Hospital. Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center was second, with five doctors ranked on the list.
