YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH: Gov. Kathy Hochul met with advocates from the Mental Health Association in New York State on Tuesday to push for the passage of state legislation to reign in business practices used by social media companies that harm kids’ mental health. Hochul is advocating for the state legislatures to pass the Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation for Kids Act, which bans social media platforms from providing addictive algorithm-based feeds to minors without parental consent, and the New York Child Data Protection Act to restrict sites from collecting kids’ data. The administration hopes to pass the bills by the end of the legislative session on June 6.

NURSE STRIKE: Union nurses who work at Ellis Medicine and Bellevue Women’s Center in Schenectady voted to authorize a three-day labor strike over safe staffing concerns, the New York State Nurses Association said Tuesday. Nurses at Ellis have been negotiating for a contract over the last year to improve staffing; this vote authorizes nurse leaders to issue a 10-day strike notice to leadership and has the potential to send 600 nurses on strike. The strike authorization comes a week after a third-party arbitrator ruled that Ellis violated agreed-upon staffing ratios in nurse contracts, marking the first upstate hospital to win an arbitration fight, according to NYSNA.

ICYMI: Last year, there were nearly 1,800 incidents of police violence involving an individual experiencing mental distress, up 36% since 2017, according to a review of state records published by NY1 last week. Police violence has been on the rise, and incidents involving people with mental health challenges are some of the most dangerous, the report found; one in 100 encounters between an officer and an individual in crisis turns violent. The investigation follows the death of Win Rozario, who was shot and killed by police in his home earlier this year after calling 911 in mental distress. Rozario is one of 20 people who have died at the hands of police when experiencing a mental health crisis since 2015, the investigation found.
