The 77th Festival de Cannes — an annual festival in the south of France that premieres new international films — begins today, May 14, and runs until Saturday, May 25. The first red carpet has yet to begin, but so far, jury members Greta Gerwig (the Barbie director is leading the 77th Grand Jury as the first female American director to serve as a Cannes jury president) and Lily Gladstone have made their initial appearances as well-dressed judges. Meryl Streep resembled a cool vacationer who stumbled upon the festival, and, looking as fabulous as always, Anya Taylor-Joy is there for her latest blockbuster (no, not Dune: Part Two). Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga premieres on Wednesday night as the long-awaited prequel to the 2015 film. The most anticipated premieres this year include The Apprentice, Emilia Perez, Bird, Oh Canada, The Balconettes,Sean Baker’s Anora,Yorgos Lanthimos’s Kinds of Kindness, and Frances Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis. Expect to see stars including Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Joe Alwyn, Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Uma Thurman, Jacob Elordi, Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldana, Barry Keoghan, Sebastian Stan, and Noémie Merlant.
We will also keep our eyes on which celebrities break the Cannes red-carpet guidelines. Yes, you read that right: The prestigious festival has some pretty binary and prestigious rules regarding who can wear what. While nothing is set in writing, women walking the red carpet are expected to wear long gowns and high heels and men a jacket and tie. That’s why moments such as Kristen Stewart taking off her heels in 2018 or Jennifer Lawrence walking the Anatomy of a Fall premiere in flip-flops garnered so much attention.
