Charlie Puth Says the Last Few Weeks Have Been ‘Crazy’

While reviews of Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Departmentwere somewhat mixed, one person undoubtedly loved it: Charlie Puth. The singer was name-checked on the album’s title track, in which Swift sings, “You smoked then ate seven bars of chocolate / We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist.” People made fun of that line when the album dropped, but those of us who were obsessed with Puth’s 2018 album Voicenotes know she’s right.

Over the weekend, Puth seemed to finally address the line as he shared a snippet of a new song, “Hero.” In text overlaid on the video, Puth wrote, “These last couple weeks have been crazy for obvious reasons, but I wanted to share something with you.”

“This is a song I wrote about my friend called ‘Hero,’” Puth continued. “Sometimes I get a little nervous being overly honest in my music which is why this was sitting on my hard drive for awhile.”

The singer did not mention Swift directly, but instead wrote, “I think someone out there was giving me a sign that I needed to release it.” Then the song kicks in, and it’s fairly standard Puth fare. He’s singing about a woman he’s trying to woo, but she is not making it easy. See also: “BOY” or “Somebody Told Me.” You could honestly hit shuffle on his discography and find a song like this pretty quickly.

Is Swift the hero Puth is singing about? I don’t think so, but I do think he’s very smart for using his name-check as a springboard to release new music. Puth shared that “Hero” will be released on May 24, and in the meantime I will continue to wonder if Taylor Swift likes the song “Empty Cups” as much as I do.
