It’s the first Monday of May, and you know what that means: Avoid the Upper East Side at all costs. Celebrities, designers, and stylists alike are all in crunch mode to prepare for tonight’s Met Gala, titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” and featuring the theme “Garden of Time.” Expect lots of archival pieces and nods to nature. With the 2024 Met Gala mere hours away, here’s everything to know ahead of that first red carpet look.
When is the 2024 Met Gala?
The official start time is 6 p.m., but we’ll be updating you live whenever the first celebrity (or roach) hits the carpet, both here and on our socials.
Who’s on the 2024 Met Gala guest list?
Co-chairs Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth will definitely be in attendance, and thank God. I need a Zendaya Met Gala moment desperately. Hopefully, beaus Tom Holland and Ben Affleck will be present as well. Rihanna confirmed her attendance, but here’s to hoping she doesn’t arrive later than 10 p.m. Last year, she was so late that other guests had already begun to leave. Honorary chairs include Jonathan Anderson of Loewe and Shou Chew, the chief executive of TikTok, meaning a gaggle of Loewe celebs (Mike Faist, Josh O’Connor, Taylor Russell, and Greta Lee, probably) and maybe — but hopefully not unless it’s Addison Rae — some prominent TikTokers.
What’s the theme again?
After last year’s ode to Karl Lagerfeld, the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art decided on something a little less controversial. The exhibition put on by the Costume Institute is titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” and is set to focus on forgotten and fragile garments, including current pieces by designers Phillip Lim and Stella McCartney, and archival designs from classics like Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, and Hubert de Givenchy, to name a few.
As for the dress code for this evening (yes, they are different), its focus is “The Garden of Time” and can be a chance for attendees to take it very literally and play with the garden aspect or nod to time with more archival designs and pieces.
Will Taylor Swift be at the Met Gala?
The last Met Gala Taylor Swift attended was eight years and three boyfriends ago, but Swifties have never given up hope that she will make a big couture comeback. This would not be a bad time for it — between her massively successful tour, impending album release, and the most public relationship of all time, Swift is having an incredible year. Of course, her fans managed to dig up a few shreds of evidence that she could be there — Swift’s tour schedule gives her time to fly to New York on May 6, and her stylist Joseph Cassell allegedly followed a Met Gala fan account in February. But TMZ claims Swift and Kelce RSVP’d “no” to individual invitations, denying us their long-awaited red-carpet debut. —Danielle Cohen
