King Charles Is Going Back to Work

King Charles will return to his royal duties next week, Buckingham Palace announced on Friday. For the past few months, the king has been out of the public eye after revealing his cancer diagnosis back in February. Since then, he has been receiving treatment and recuperating, according to a statement from the palace.

The king’s first public engagement will be a symbolic one. On Tuesday, Charles and Queen Camilla will visit a cancer-treatment center to meet with doctors and patients. While the palace did not say what else Charles would be getting up to, they noted that this would be “the first in a number of external engagements” he would be undertaking in the next few weeks. Later this summer, Charles and Camila will be hosting Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan for a state visit.

The announcement of Charles’s return to work came just one day after the Daily Beast reported that officials were regularly reviewing Charles’s funeral plan, codenamed Operation Menai Bridge. “Of course he is determined to beat it and they are throwing everything at it. Everyone is staying optimistic, but he is really very unwell. More than they are letting on,” one source said of Charles’s cancer.

That’s certainly no good. But hey, maybe Charles will step out on Tuesday looking great and we can put that gossip to bed. In my book, it’s great that the king is getting back to work. He has a lot of important matters that need his attention, like a jam war with his estranged daughter-in-law and Prince Louis looking like a cutie patootie.
