How to Dress in the Office During the Summer

While each product featured is independently selected, the shoes within this article were chosen by Cut editors from a list of products provided by Nordstrom.

You’ve seen the videos circulating on TikTok: “How to Build a Work Wardrobe,” “What I Wore to Work This Week” (which has 46.3 million posts), “Where Can I Get Comfortable Work-Appropriate Shoes?” The industry (and corporate culture) has concluded that personality is in, and that includes office days, too. If you aren’t in a fashion office like us at the Cut, where almost no daring ensemble is looked at with a squinted brow, then the quest for workwear ensembles can appear a bit differently. Personally, I center my look around my shoes. I’m usually rushing to the subway or even just trekking around the city after work, so I want to make sure my feet are happy all day. This time, I chose a pointy flat.

For those working in an environment with less-relaxed dress codes, it isn’t possible to waltz in Monday morning wearing a pair of flip-flops, even if they are from The Row. I’m looking at you, Quiet Luxury fans! Thankfully, flats are still dominating the footwear market, with shoe lovers (like myself) opting for all-day comfort rather than added height. Yeah, I’m short — there’s no way around it. Sorry, kitten heels, but my flat shoes took over this season and there’s no looking back now.

The pointed-toe flat that can dress up any look

These Prada flats are the best of both worlds. They add a pop of color and are decorated with artistic flowers tucked inside a folded bow. Whether worn with a pencil skirt, oversize summer dress, or linen trousers, they’ll easily blur the line between the weekend and a hectic workweek. Dainty yet powerful! If you’d rather not spend a month’s rent, look to Linea Paolo’s similar option.

How do I style pointy flats?

Whether your nine-to-five office is in a cubicle in midtown or a co-working space downtown, a pencil skirt is always a good start. But no, these aren’t your mother’s pencil skirts. Having been appointed as a workwear must-have for decades, the pencil skirt’s fashion-forward status was cemented at the fall 2023 shows, with Saint Laurent, Miu Miu, and Gucci leading the cause. We’re fond of midi-length silhouettes that offer unique details, like Bottega Veneta’s mixed-media skirt. Try to ignore the price tag for now!

We paired Bottega’s with the coordinating ribbed button-up top, but you can embody these silhouette pairings on the high street as well — no need to break the bank. Just take a look at Vince’s cotton midi or Reformation’s airy linen option from Nordstrom. Eileen Fisher also has a great A-line assortment made of organic-linen textures.

Opt for your favorite tote bag with ample texture (think straw, woven details, or glossy coated canvas) to bring even more personality, and then add personalized jewelry. You can never have too many rings, bracelets, or earring stacks. Ornate jewels with organic details, like Alexis Bittar’s raw-gold-plated brass earrings, are a fab place to start.
