STRIKE AUTHORIZATION: Registered nurses and other health care workers at Northwell Health’s Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow voted by a 99% margin to authorize a strike, labor union 1199 SEIU said on Friday. The workers have been negotiating with management for a fair contract since they unionized in June 2022, and are calling for improvements in pay, benefits and staffing ratios. The vote does not mean that workers will go on strike, but gives them the power to do so.

HEALTH PLAN TRANSPARENCY: State lawmakers introduced a bill last week to improve public data on how much New York spends on managed long-term care plans, a type of health insurer that operates as a middleman to pay home care agencies. Sen. Rachel May, who represents Syracuse neighborhoods, and Assemblywoman Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas, who represents parts of Western Queens, proposed the legislation to increase transparency of the plans, which receive billions from the state each year. The legislation would require the state to report on the number of enrollees, spending and claims denials.

TOWN HALL: The state Department of Health and Office for the Aging held a town hall at the SAGE Center in Harlem on Friday to answer questions about the Master Plan on Aging. The event is part of the state’s public engagement process to inform the plan, a comprehensive set of policy recommendations to improve aging services and quality of care in New York. A preliminary draft of the plan is set to be released this year, and the agencies expect the plan to be complete by 2025.
