Whalebone

Whalebone

sstavsky has added a photo to the pool:

Dating back to the nineteenth century, this building was for many years the home of a whalebone-cutting business. (While whale oil was used for lighting, the bones were used in items like corsets and umbrellas.) The industry is long gone, but the building still stands.

Seen on Duane Street, in the Tribeca neighborhood of Lower Manhattan.
