With an expanded lineup of nearly 100 films across 5 screens, attendance and box office revenue have seen an unprecedented 33% growth. One-third of the screenings were sold out within days, indicating New Yorkers’ desire for diverse storytelling. The expanded Thai and Taiwanese sections were highlights, while the return of major Hong Kong productions reignited the city’s fondness for this vibrant cinema,” stated NYAFF executive director and president of the New York Asian Film Foundation, Samuel Jamier.
The audience award runner-up was Soi Cheang’s Hong Kong actioner “Twilight Warrior: Walled In,” which played at the closing ceremony. Third place was tied between Taiwanese director Leo Wang’s “Breaking and Re-entering,” a reverse-heist action-comedy, and Japanese director Shiraiishi Kazuya’s epic samurai film “Bushido.”
