Listeria Outbreak Associated with Deli Meats
Out of the 18 patients interviewed, 16 mentioned consuming sliced deli meats, including turkey, liverwurst, and ham, bought from deli counters. The outbreak has not been traced back to any specific stores, brands, or products yet. Consequently, no recalls have been made in connection to this outbreak. Furthermore, there is no evidence showing that people are falling ill from prepackaged deli meats.
Understanding Listeria
Listeria are bacteria that can contaminate various foods. Common symptoms of listeriosis, the infection caused by listeria, include fever, muscle aches, and tiredness. Those affected may also experience headaches, a stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or seizures. Symptoms can appear on the same day the contaminated food is eaten, but typically manifest within two weeks of consumption. While listeria rarely leads to severe illness for most people, it poses a heightened risk for individuals over the age of 65, those with weakened immune systems, and pregnant individuals.
