The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have indicated that 28 individuals in 12 states have been known to be affected by the bacterial strain, although the actual number of cases and states involved is believed to be higher. The nation’s leading number of cases has been recorded in New York.
The meat products linked to the outbreak were found to have come from several supermarkets and grocery store delis, with nearly 90% of the victims, all of whom were hospitalized, reporting that they had consumed meats such as turkey, liverwurst, and ham that had been sliced at deli counters. So far, it has not been determined that anyone fell ill due to the consumption of prepackaged deli meats.
The individuals affected by the outbreak ranged in age from 32 to 94 years, with a median age of 75. Males and white people were found to be more susceptible to contracting listeria, according to the data collected.
The CDC and other investigating organizations are working to identify the source of the outbreak and the contaminated food causing it. Listeria, caused by ingesting food containing the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, is a severe infection that causes a variety of symptoms, including fever, muscle aches, headaches, stiff neck, confusion, diarrhea, and vomiting, which may occur within a day to up to 10 weeks after consumption.
According to CDC statistics, about 1,600 cases of listeria infection are reported annually, resulting in approximately 260 deaths. Pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to experiencing severe illness due to the infection. The CDC is continuing their efforts to update the public with the latest information on this ongoing outbreak.
