NEW PSYCH UNIT: Bronx-based SBH Health System is set to open a new medical psychiatric unit at its flagship St. Barnabas Hospital today. The 1,860-square-foot unit, which will have eight beds for individuals with acute medical illnesses and behavioral health conditions, is funded in part from a donation of $4.3 million from the Rego Park-based insurance company Fidelis Care. The opening comes as New York City continues to face a mental health crisis, with the Bronx experiencing the highest rate of psychiatric hospitalizations compared to any other borough, SBH Health System said.

NURSE CONTRACT: Members of the New York State Nurses Association ratified a contract with Mount Sinai’s New York Eye and Ear Infirmary on Tuesday, with 100% of nurses voting to secure wage increases on par with contracts won by other private sector nurses last year, the union said. The new contracts also include layoff and benefit termination language to protect nurses in case hospital services close down, as the future of New York Eye and Ear remains in limbo. Mount Sinai planned to merge the hospital with Beth Israel Hospital on the Lower East Side, but is now set to close Beth Israel next month. Mount Sinai has not revealed its plans for New York Eye and Ear, the union said.

MED-SURG UPGRADE: Northwell Health’s Phelps Hospital in Westchester opened its renovated fifth-floor medical-surgical unit on Monday, a year-long project that cost the hospital $8.8 million. The unit includes 15 single rooms, three isolation rooms for patients with contagious respiratory illnesses and two comfort rooms for patients receiving end-of-life care. Renovations of the comfort care rooms were funded through community donations, while Northwell provided capital investments to cover the rest of the project costs. Phelps Hospital is a 218-bed acute care hospital that has 1,700 employees.
