Medicaid experts, hospital leaders, pharmaceutical executives and digital health innovators gathered at the Hilton in Midtown last Thursday for a health care summit hosted by Crain’s New York Business and the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
The event, sponsored by Northwell Health, KPMG and the Craneware Group, featured panels about growth in New York’s Medicaid spending, the role of pharmacy benefit managers in drug pricing and the potential of artificial intelligence technologies to ease physicians’ administrative burdens.
The panels covered some of the most pressing health care issues in New York including Medicaid spending, one of the state’s primary cost drivers which ballooned to $100 billion last year. Despite continued growth in Medicaid spending, hospitals and nursing homes are still struggling to cover the costs of care as Medicaid enrollment and home care drive up costs, industry leaders and health policy experts said.
Speakers on the panel included Elisabeth Wynn, executive vice president of health economics and finance at the Greater New York Hospital Association, Stephen Hanse, president and CEO of the New York State Health Facilities Association, and Bill Hammond, senior health policy fellow at the Empire Center for Public Policy.
The event also included a panel about drug pricing and pharmacy benefit managers, drawing attention to rising costs of common medications. The speakers included Scott Jacobson, chief operating officer at Northwell Health’s Vivo Health Pharmacy, Dr. Wyley McCoy, senior vice president at the Craneware Group and Dr. Nilay Shah, managing director of health benefits, analytics and innovation at Delta Air Lines.
Closing out the day was a discussion on digital health trends, including the ability of artificial intelligence technologies to reduce physicians’ workloads and offer hospitals a return on investment when it comes to employee satisfaction and efficiencies in care. Bunny Ellerin, CEO of Digital Health New York, Arel Lidow, technical co-founder of Cedar, and Brian Doty, health care strategy and analytics leader at Deloitte, highlighted health tech trends and challenges.
The health care summit included a keynote presentation on health care disruption and the pending closure of Beth Israel Medical Center from Mount Sinai Health System CEO Dr. Brendan Carr, as well as an overview of Amazon Pharmacy’s growth strategy from the vertical’s director and general manager, Tanvi Patel.
