Pope Francis Can’t Stop Saying Gay Slurs

I’m starting to think that Pope Francis wasn’t that sorry when the Vatican apologized for his use of a gay slur two weeks ago. According to ANSA, a top Italian news agency, the pope used the same slur again this past Tuesday while speaking to a group of Roman priests. Francis was reportedly cautioning against gay men being allowed into seminaries, which was the same context in which he used the slur last time.

One Italian newspaper, Corriere della Sera, reported that this time around the pope was relaying something he had been told when he said the word. “A bishop came to me and told me, ‘There is too much frociaggine here in the Vatican,’” the newspaper reported, per the New York Timestranslation. Frociaggine is the Italian equivalent of our English-language f-slur, so you can piece together what was being said.

A statement released by Vatican News regarding Tuesday’s meeting did not make note of the pope’s slur usage (obviously), but acknowledged that “admission of homosexuals to seminaries” was on the agenda. According to the press release, the pope “spoke of the danger of ideologies in the Church” and said that while priests should “welcome and accompany” gay people, they should be cautious “regarding their entry into the seminary.”

While the Vatican was quick to release an apology the last time Pope Francis’s lips got too loose, they’ve yet to comment on this alleged instance of casual homophobia. Although, their last apology was “Pope Francis apologizes to those who felt offended by the use of a term, as reported by others.” If the Vatican does share another apology, expect it to be something along the lines of “Ugh, sorry you heard about that, but it was so different in context.”
