H+H board greenlights $25M women’s health suite at South Brooklyn Health

New York City Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn in Coney Island is getting a new $25 million women’s health suite after the board of directors greenlit the project last week.

Board members voted at a public meeting Thursday to approve a contract with Long Island construction firm Axis Construction Corporation to design and build a 20,000 square-foot women’s health suite. The project, previously approved by the board’s capital committee, is an attempt to expand women’s health services before, during and after childbirth.

The new women’s health suite will have 28 exam rooms, six ultrasound rooms, six procedure rooms and staff education and counseling areas, said Kelly Burns, project manager at H+H.

The suite is an expansion from South Brooklyn’s current 11,000 square-foot women’s health suite, which has 20 exam rooms, three of which are treatment rooms. Burns said that the hospital had a 35% increase in births in the last two years and needs additional space for women’s health care. South Brooklyn Hospital performed 1,400 births last year, up from 900 in 2021.

The public hospital system board approved a contract including construction costs of $23 million and a $2 million contingency fee. H+H entered a three-year contract with the opportunity to renew in the following two years, and expects construction to begin this summer.

H+H has spent $12.5 million at Axis Construction Corporation to date, according to city contract data from Checkbook NYC. The company previously worked on the health system’s Ida G clinic in Coney Island and the Vanderbilt Clinic on Staten Island.

H+H has 11 hospitals citywide, 30 outpatient Gotham Health facilities and five long-term care centers.
