East Dundee’s first outdoor summer concert set for Thursday night
East Dundee’s first weekday street fest of the summer will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 23, when the Pino Farina Band, an adult-alternative rock group, takes the stage outside The Depot at 319 N. River St.
Food and drinks will be sold at surrounding downtown restaurants and Hoof Woof & Meow Animal Rescue will have cats and dogs available for adoption, according to a Facebook post.
This is the first in a rotation of summer events that are held in downtown East Dundee. Throughout the season, the village hosts Motor Monday Cruise Nights, Wine Down Wednesdays and Thirsty Thursdays, with each held once a month.

Elgin Academy marks its final year with legacy celebration Saturday
To mark its 185th and final school year, Elgin Academy will be holding a legacy celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 25, on its campus, 350 Park St.
About 600 past and current students, parents, faculty, trustees and friends of the school are expected to attend the event, according to a news release. There will be a brief program at 1 p.m. with catered food trucks and activities to follow.

Funeral held this week for Stephen Laird, local funeral home owner
Elgin-area funeral home owner Stephen Laird, 67, died May 12 at his home after an 11-year battle with renal cancer.
A lifelong Elgin resident and noted athlete, Laird played basketball for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in 1979. He apprenticed at Stout Funeral Home in Elgin before opening Laird Funeral Home in Elgin in 1980 with his parents, Donald and Patricia Laird, according to his obituary.
In 1998, he became co-owner and president of Laird Family Funeral Services. Laird and his brother, Rob, opened Laird Funeral Home in West Dundee in 1999 and acquired Wait-Ross-Allanson Funeral Services of Elgin and Algonquin in 2003.
Laird was involved with the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame and the Rotary Club of Elgin, Elgin Elks Lodge and the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by his father; his wife of 41 years, Jami; five adult children; eight grandchildren; three sisters; two brothers; numerous nephews and nieces; his mother in-law and a sister-in-law.
Visitation for Laird was held Monday, May 20, at Laird Funeral Home in Elgin. His funeral Mass took place Tuesday, May 21, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Elgin followed by burial at Plato Center Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship Fund.

Annual St. Charles Fine Art Show taking place this weekend
The 26th annual St. Charles Fine Art Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 25, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 26, on Riverside Avenue between Main Street and Illinois Avenue in downtown St. Charles.
The show will feature artworks created by more than 100 artists in 13 different mediums, all available for sale, organizers said.
Throughout the event, there will be a variety of family-friendly activities taking place at the St. Charles Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Activity Zone on Riverside Avenue. The area will offer art-related activities, including the opportunity to paint a car, organized by the St. Charles Arts Council, and several hands-on art activities for purchase, sponsored by All Things Art Studio.
This year, there will be a new Art and Music Experience taking place at First Street Plaza from 1 to 3 p.m. on both days of the event. Visitors there can experience Alex Puryear create a work of art alongside the band 13 Days on May 26 and alongside the band FLEX Trio on May 27.
