Katy Perry might not have made it to this year’s Met Gala, but after AI photos of her on the red carpet went viral, plenty of people thought she did — including her mom. Perry reshared the fake images on Instagram, clarifying that she “couldn’t make it to the MET” because she “had to work,” but by that point, the photos had already been reshared thousands of times.

Perry also posted a screenshot of a text from her mom: “Didn’t know you went to the Met. What a gorgeous gown. You look like the Rose Parade, you are your own float lol.” The gown her mom was referring to was a floor-length dress with flowers appearing to grow from a moss garden that started at the hem — which, to be clear, was created by AI. Another photo showed AI Perry in a short dress with a metal corset top and floral bottom.

Perry wasn’t the only victim of Monday night’s fakes. An image of Rihanna smiling in a larger-than-life gown has been reshared more than 100,000 times. The only problem is that the singer didn’t attend the gala because she was reportedly home sick with the flu. Per NPR, it’s not clear where the images originated, but the fakes also appear to show Lady Gaga — who hasn’t attended the gala since 2019 — dressed like the Guggenheim with flowers pouring down its spiral stairs.
