Want to Smell Like Bella Hadid’s Farm?

Bella Hadid’s been fronting campaigns and walking runways since she was 16. She’s sat in countless chairs for makeup and has gotten the most highly coveted skin-care treatments as a supermodel. Still, for her first foray into launching a beauty brand herself she’s entering the fragrance category. Shocked? We were a bit until we learned more about it.

What is Orəbella?

‘Ôrebəlla, pronounced aura bella, is the first-ever alcohol-free, essential-oil-based bi-phase perfume on the market, a two-layer formula that not only leaves a memorable scent but also is said to nourish the skin.

What are the Orebəlla scents?

There are three different scents: Window2Soul, a floral fragrance with notes of rose and jasmine (though the woody tonka-bean notes are most potent); Salted Muse, a blend of sea salt and pink pepper with earthy amber notes (that instantly smells earthy once applied but warms up and settles in quite woody and warm); and Blooming Fire, a blend of patchouli and bergamot that reminds us of a tropical-beach vacation.

I tried Orebəlla for a month and these are all my thoughts:

First, for the oils and fragrances in the bottle to fully “activate,” the bottle needs to be shaken up. You can see the separation of the oils through the geode-shaped bottle. These aren’t your normal fragrances that you’re used to, so I almost had to retrain my nose to know what was coming. Each scent needs a few minutes to really get acquainted with your skin. The first scent I opened was Blooming Fire, I shook it and instantly sprayed it onto my skin and the earthiness of the patchouli was all I could smell. Minutes later the citrusy spice of bergamot came through, and later in the day I could smell this tropical scent that yearned for the tropics. If I had to choose a favorite it would probably be the warm Salted Muse because the warmth in the amber notes feels like a fragrance fit for a night out. The distinctive scents are bold and long lasting; they cling to your skin and stay with you throughout the day. I found that the first hour of wearing the scent could smell completely different than a few hours into wearing it as the oils set in.

Are essential oils okay to be worn directly on the skin?

Essential oils alone normally have to be diluted properly and patch-tested before being worn directly on the skin. Hadid’s fragrance is formulated with the brand’s Ôrelixir, a skin-care-rich base of moisturizing ingredients like a five-oil blend including camellia, almond, olive, jojoba, and shea. This not only nurtures the skin but also intensifies the lifetime of the scent on your skin. The formulations have all been tested by dermatologists and are suitable for sensitive skin. Hadid needed the most gentle formula, so she vouches that it is okay to wear these directly on the skin. When wearing it on my skin I’ve found that it leaves a subtle radiance. I’d never recommend spraying anything with oils on or near your clothes, including this. I accidentally got some on my clothes when testing and the oils didn’t stain them badly. Still, it’s a good idea only to put this on your skin; this isn’t the fragrance you can spray all over yourself when you’re done getting dressed.

Why did Hadid make an essential oil fragrance?

The Palestinian Dutch model has been open about her health and wellness journey following her Lyme disease diagnosis a little over a decade ago. Her (very expensive) wellness routine includes a host of things from pills to sea moss to green juice. Another one of her grounding practices for her routine is essential oils, which she says she started getting into by way of being on her family farm. “My way into fragrance was being on my farm with our lavender plants, and we have a cute health-food store down the street from my house there … They have the craziest variety of essential oils, and I’m obsessed with putting things together that you wouldn’t normally smell,” she said in a WWD interview. When she recently shared her routine on TikTok, you could see the variety of essential oils overflowing on her countertop. Because of her health issues, alcohol in fragrance doesn’t quite agree with her skin. For Hadid, she grew a fascination for essential oils, and that’s the experience she wanted to bring to the fragrance industry.

How much does Orəbella cost?

For fragrance, the prices are reasonable. It is $35 for 10 ml., $72 for 50 ml., and $100 for 100 ml.

When can I buy Orəbella?

The trio of fragrances launches on orebella.com on May 2, on ulta.com on May 10, and it will be in all Ulta stores on May 12.
